Approaching Wizard Island by boat | Wizard Island summit | Sun Notch

Date of Visits: August 2-3, 2011

How we got there: Drove from Redwood National Park during a San Francisco to Seattle road trip. 4 hours.

Lodging: Cabins at Mazama Village

Favorites:

  • Sun Notch Viewpoint – Got our first breathtaking view of the lake from this location.
  • Rim Drive – 33-mile loop road circles the entire crater rim with multiple viewpoints.
  • Boat Cruise – Hike down the Cletewood Cove Trail to the water and take a ranger-guided tour of the lake.
  • Wizard Island – Select the Wizard Island cruise with the option to disembark for three hours hours to hike up the cinder cone. Pack a picnic lunch, but watch out for thieving ground squirrels.

Tips: This park has a very limited season due to climate and elevation. Plan well ahead for best selection of activities. Boat cruises are only scheduled to run from the end of June through mid-August.

Next time: Stay in Crater Lake Lodge. Hike Mt. Scott, the park’s highest point.
