
Walking on Fort Jefferson | Snorkeling | Approaching Fort Jefferson

How we got there: Yankee Freedom III ferry boat – Dry Tortugas is mostly open water and several small islands located 70 miles from Key West. A once-daily 2.25 hour one-way ride brings you there. Breakfast and lunch are provided, bar is open on the return trip.

Favorites:
- Snorkeling – paddle amongst colorful tropical fish and coral along the beach and dock of Garden Key. Snorkeling equipment is provided for free by the boat company.
- Ranger-guided tour of Fort Jefferson – Ranger explains the construction, use and preservation of the massive Fort Jefferson on an hour-long interpretive walk. Sign up for a time slot on the boat.
Tips: Don’t ignore this park because of it’s small size or remote location. Make the effort to go, it’s unique and definitely worth it.
Next time: Camp overnight on the beach.
