Gateway Arch – Missouri

View of the Old Courthouse from the top | The Arch | Museum at the Gateway Arch

Date of Visit: August 25, 2019

How we got there: Amtrak Illinois Service from Chicago, about 5 hours, several departure options per day.

Lodging:
Airbnb in the Central West End neighborhood, across the street from Forest Park.

Favorites:

  • The Arch – Ride to the observation deck of the 630 foot stainless steel arch. The tram cars feel like you’re getting inside a clothes dryer, but the views of St. Louis and  Illinois across the river are worth it.
  • Museum at the Gateway Arch – Under the arch there is a museum dedicated to the history of the area. Informative displays cover the pre-european settlement era up through the design and construction of the modern monument.

Tips: If you ask us, this does not fit the definition of “National Park” but it’s a cool place to visit nonetheless. Spend a couple hours here and then take advantage of all the other activities St. Louis has to offer. Forest Park, St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri Botanical Garden, City Museum and Craft Breweries are highlights.

Next time: Visit the Old Courthouse across the street from the arch. We were there several years ago, but it’s been updated since then.
