Guadalupe Peak Trail | Guadalupe Summit | El Capitan from Guadalupe Peak
Date of Visit: April 19, 2016
How we got there: Drove from Marfa, TX, Just over 2.25 hours. Route passes by the famous Prada Marfa art installation.
Lodging: Rodeway Inn, Whites City, NM. Just across the border adjacent to Carlsbad Caverns.
Favorites:
- Guadalupe Peak Hike – 8-mile out and back trip with 3,038 feet of elevation gain leads to the highest point in Texas at 8,751 ft. Some sections of the trail are extremely steep. The view from the top is well worth it.
Tips: Combine a visit to the more-famous Carlsbad Caverns with this park, but don’t skip Guadalupe. Springtime is the perfect season for a visit, summer gets very hot and can be stormy.
Next time: Visit the woodsy McKittrick Canyon section of the park. Hike to Devil’s Hall. Backcountry camping at Guadalupe Peak Campground. Hike to the edge of El Capitan.
