Isle Royale – Michigan

Daisy Farm sunset | West Chickenbone Campground | Greenstone Ridge Trail

Date of Visit: July 25-28, 2016

How we got there: Voyageur II ferry from Grand Portage, MN.

Lodging: Backcountry Campsites: West Chickenbone Lake, Daisy Farm, Rock Harbor.
The night before the ferry we stayed at Grand Portage Lodge & Casino.

Favorites:

  • The Wilderness Experience. We spent three full days with no contact with the outside world.
  • Hiking 19 miles and only passing a handful of people.
  • Spending an evening playing cards with strangers on a lake miles from anything.
  • The beer waiting for us at the end of our trip at the Rock Harbor Lodge.
  • Waking up to loon calls.

Tips: Buy a detailed map and study the possible routes before you go, options are practically limitless. Build your trip around the ferry schedules off and on the island. Practice packing your backpack before departure day. Invest in a super tiny packable sleeping bag. Buying a water filter at the last minute was the best decision we made.

Next time: Backpack the length of the island on the Greenstone Ridge Trail for a week. Visit Scoville Point. Visit the Rock Harbor Lighthouse.
