Blue Mesa | Long Logs | Painted Desert
Date of Visit: April 9, 2017
How we got there: Drove from Tucson/Saguaro, about 5.5 hours with great scenery along the route.
Lodging: Wigwam Motel, Holbrook
Favorites:
- Long Logs / Agate House Loop – 2.6-mile easy walk/hike near the Rainbow Forest Museum that leads past the park’s longest petrified logs and a restored pueblo made of petrified wood.
- Blue Mesa – A 1-mile loop trail leads from the mesa top down through colorful eroded pink, purple and blue badlands.
- Painted Desert Overlooks – Any of the viewpoints in the park’s northern section offer great views of the Painted Desert. Stop at the historic Painted Desert Inn at the Kachina Point overlook. Our favorite lookout was from Chinde Point.
Tips: There is one long road that makes a North/South pass through the park, start at either end and make your way to the other to avoid having to backtrack.
Next time: Hiking and camping in the backcountry.
