Dream Lake | Emerald Lake | Elk grazing along Bear Lake Road
Date of Visit: December 28, 2012
How we got there: Day trip from Denver, 1.5 hour drive.
Lodging: Stayed in Denver
Favorites:
- Snowshoeing to Emerald Lake via the Bear Lake Trail. 3.5 miles out and back with 650 ft elevation gain. Trailhead is at 9,475 ft and Emerald Lake is at 10,110 ft.
- Trail Ridge Road to Many Parks Curve overlook (as far as you can go in winter). Panoramic viewpoints and lots of wildlife along the way.
Tips: Plan for extreme cold and wind in winter. Most of the park is very high elevation, so plan strenuous hikes accordingly.
Next time: Visit in summer. Drive the complete Trail Ridge Road over the Continental Divide. Hike Mt. Ida or another high peak.
