Houston’s Horseback Riding | Sequoia | Desert life
Date of Visit: April 7, 2017
How we got there: Flew from Chicago to Tucson.
Lodging: Lodge on the Desert, Tucson.
Favorites:
- Bajada Scenic Loop – A good introductory area to the park’s West district. We drove this 6-mile gravel auto loop to visit the Valley View Overlook Trail and Signal Hill Petroglyphs. Also has a trailhead to the Hugh Norris Trail that climbs Wasson Peak.
- Horseback ride – Houston’s Horseback Rides offers two scenic trail rides per day or retired rodeo horses. Departure times vary by season, call ahead to reserve.
Tips: The east and west portions of the park are farther apart than they look on a map, plan plenty of driving time across Tucson. Temperatures in April were in the upper 80s and lower 90s, so plan for extreme heat unless you’re visiting in winter months.
Next time: Longer hike: either Tanque Verde Ridge or Hike Hugh Norris Trail to Wasson Peak. Visit the nearby Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
