Lodgepole Campground #102 | Founders Group | General Sherman

Date of Visit: July 2-4, 2018

How we got there: Drove from Grant Grove/ Kings Canyon, right next door.

Lodging:
Lodgepole Campground Huge campground with a variety of campsites set within tall trees, large rocks and a rushing creek. Site 102 was a perfect semi-secluded location.

Favorites:

  • Giant Forest – A network of fairly easy trails offers endless options for exploring a grove of enormous trees. Create your own loop or make a one-way trip and use the shuttle system to return.
  • Moro Rock – 400 steps lead to the top of a huge granite dome overlooking much of the park. Also stop by nearby Hanging Rock.
  • Crystal Cave – Highly-decorated marble cave can be visited on a guided tour. Reached by a 20-minute drive down an extremely winding road and a half mile hike down from the parking area.

Tips: For a more upscale dinner than the cafe at Lodgepole Market, check out the nearby Wuksachi Lodge and its restaurant, The Peaks.

Next time: Hike to some higher elevation locations like Alta Peak or Pear Lake.
Visit the Mineral King area for its amazing hiking.
