Our first road trip rule: Book ahead

On the very first night of our first trip together, we learned an important money-saving tip: Always book hotels ahead of time.
We left Chicago on a Friday night after work and headed toward South Carolina. Our idea was to drive as far as we could and stop for the night whenever we got tired. The logic being that we didn’t want to commit to a hotel too far away, but we also didn’t want to stop if we had energy to go another hour. In the end, we ended up making it as far as Louisville, Kentucky (what we expected) and stopped at a Super 8 Motel we thought would be cheap. We paid $90 for a room we were in for a total of 8 hours. The waffle iron in the lobby the next morning eased our sticker shock, but we’ve never booked a room on the spot again. By using Google maps to provide an educated guess about how far we can go in a leg of driving, we plan ahead and have since stayed in standard roadside chain hotels for as little as $40. Hotwire.com has provided the greatest savings, but even a hotel’s regular website or hotels.com is cheaper than booking at the front desk. If you travel with a smartphone or tablet, you can even book from the car just prior to arrival to ease your fear of hotel commitment.

Detour: Cottonwood Canyon Road

One definite road trip recommendation we have is to minimize your time spent on interstate highways. We’re always looking for an alternate course that is a little off the beaten path.

While researching the route for our upcoming southwestern trip on Google Maps, we discovered an interesting possible detour: Cottonwood Canyon Road through Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. The reason I say it is only a “possible” detour is that it is a seasonal road that becomes impassable in wet conditions. This road is what inspired us to rent and SUV instead of a standard car. If the weather cooperates, we’ll be able to take this 47 mile dirt trail from U.S. Highway 89 to Cannonville, UT, which is near the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. It will shave 62 miles off our route from the Grand Canyon, but take about the same amount of time because of the slow speeds. Cottonwood Canyon Road follows the Paria River and Cottonwood Creek for several miles and passes through some amazing rock formations. We’ll have to check with the Bureau of Land Management office in the area to see how conditions are before setting off into the wilderness, but if all goes as planned it should be a rewarding detour. Fingers crossed!

Detours don’t need to be off-road to be worthwhile. Just take an old US or State highway route that roughly parallels the interstate to see some local sights. We reference the book “National Geographic Guide: Scenic Highways & Byways” to find more appealing road options near our planned route.

Cottonwood Canyon Road is the blue line. The normal route we would have to take on U.S. 89 is the orange line.

America The Beautiful Pass

In preparation for visiting four National Parks on our upcoming trip, we purchased an America The Beautiful pass good for one year’s worth of entrance fees. The parks generally cost between $5 and $25 per car to enter, so if you plan on visiting multiple parks in a year, it might save money to buy this pass. For $80 you can enter over 2,000 Federal recreation sites (parks, monuments, forests, wildlife refuges, etc.) It is valid for one year from month of purchase, expiring at the end of that month. For example, our pass will cover our entrance fees through the end of March 2013. It is valid for one car or four people, if the site charges by person. They are available for purchase online at store.usgs.gov/pass or in person at most major Park Service sites. Get more information on this and other passes at nps.gov/fees_passes.htm.

Our America The Beautiful Pass has arrived.

New Trip – Desert Southwest

Our next trip is nearly upon us. At the end of March we’ll fly to Los Angeles where we’ll rent an SUV and make an 8 day loop through the Southwestern states. We’ll visit four National Parks: Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion. Plane tickets have been purchased, the “Ford Escape or similar” is reserved and all our lodging is booked. Our good friends and Pacific Northwest companions Emily and Jake will be traveling with us again this spring. Can’t wait! Stay tuned.
